Department of Ukrainian Studies
The Department of Ukrainian Studies was established on 1st April, 1996. The Department provides teaching general university courses of the modern Ukrainian language and the Ukrainian language of professional communication. Besides, the Department teachers give the courses of the modern Ukrainian literature, the history of foreign literature, as well as the Latin language at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting. The studies of Russian as a foreign language are arranged at the Department for foreign students. At the same time, the Russian and Ukrainian studies are provided for the pupils of SELS. The Department staff constantly works on the improvement of academic courses, the preparation of teaching and methodic sets of disciplines. The work on updating course curricula is also carried out. In connection with implementing the idea of a continuity of the educational process, in 2005 the Department developed complex integrated curricula providing continuous teaching of the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature, foreign literature. All three curricula got signature stamps of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The Department keeps working on the preparation of new teaching and methodic manuals. Above 40 textbooks have been written, published and republished in recent years. In 2010 the following teaching manuals and textbooks subject to getting a signature stamp of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine were prepared by the Department teaching staff: 1. G.V. Kuprikova. Modern Ukrainian Language. Syntax: Teaching Manual for Students of the Faculties of Humanities at Higher Schools (credit-modular system). 2. I.O. Pomazan. History of Foreign Literature of 20th Century: Textbook for Students of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting. The innovative methods are extensively applied in the teaching process. With Ukraine becoming a member of the Bologna process, the Department of Ukrainian Studies attaches great importance to students' independent work. With the consideration of introducing the credit-modular teaching system (CMS) in higher educational establishments, beginning from 2004 the Department teachers have written and published teaching manuals and methodic recommendations for the disciplines taught at the Department, to meet the CMS requirements. In the academic year of 2007/2008 the Department teachers created a distance computer course «Business Ukrainian Language», and in the academic year of 2009/2010 the Department teaching staff worked out a distance computer course «Modern Ukrainian Language». The scientific and research work is carried out at the Department on the following theme: “Language and Literature Component in Formation of Mental Model and Intellectual Potential of Personality: Synchronous and Diachronic Analysis”. The lecturers and teachers regularly participate in scientific, scientific and practical conferences; prepare scientific articles; work on PhD theses; write reviews of the abstracts of PhD theses; act as opponents at the presentations of PhD theses; actively engage in students' scientific and research work. Every year reports to international students' scientific conferences are made under their guidance. Three years running the Department organizes the philological section work for the annual International Students' Scientific Conference at KhUH PUA. Both students and pupils are trained to take part in the Ukrainian language competitions and olympiads. Two study groups function at the Department. The Higher School runs the group studying foreign literature under the guidance of I.O. Pomazan, the Head of Department, Associate Professor, while SELS has the “Dyvotsvit” group, which is guided by N.I. Lytvyn, a teacher. Keen attention is drawn to upbringing work. Thus, the Week of Ukrainian Culture is annually organized at KhUH PUA. This event involves action taken to develop the sense of civic and national self-consciousness of students and pupils. Every year the City Expressive Reading Contest is held as part of the Week of Ukrainian Culture (the eighth contest this year) for 10th- 11th year pupils of Kharkov schools, gymnasia and lyceums. In 2010 the Department jointly with the «Obdarovanist» gymnasium initiated the game on Ukrainain Studies “Soniashnyk” for pupils of the 1st – 11th forms of general education schools. Within the game «Soniashnyk» there was held the on-line game «Soniashnyk-uchytel 2010», which was intended for the Ukrainian language teachers. The game will be played annually. On the basis of the first game results, the game «Soniashnyk» was granted the status of an All-Ukrainian game. Associate Professor I.O. Pomazan is the head of the methodical committee, while Associate Professors T.M. Berest and G.V. Kuprikova are the members of the methodical committee of the game. Summing up the results of the annual competition between the Academy Departments in the academic year of 2009/2010, the decision was made by the Council of KhUH PUA and Trade Union on 21st June, 2010 to mark the Department in nomination “For Creative Attitude to Organization of Teaching Process” (26 winners of school olympiads, 7 winners of competitions). The staff of the Department possesses powerful potential enabling them to organize the teaching, scientific and upbringing process at a high level. In general, the Department consists mainly of experienced specialists having profound scientific and methodic knowledge, as well as civic consciousness. The Department is represented by a solidary group of people having no internal conflicts. Practically the whole teaching staff is open to innovations and has good potential for creative work. |
